5. PLAYING COMPETITIVE HOCKEY

Updated August 2023

For our Juniors, the competitive playing opportunities vary. Below is a useful overview of the Competitions and Events available to our juniors at each age.

We aim to ensure there is an activity suitable for players at all ages and levels of hockey, so please appreciate that not every child or young person will be required to play in every activity listed below.

Fundamentals
For our youngest age-group where players are just starting to understand hockey our emphasis is on positive participation through regular training. Some training will incorporate small-sided games to build awareness of defensive and attacking play and teach our youngsters the basic rules of hockey.
For U6s

Junior Festivals
Bromsgrove and other local clubs will organize these as fun mornings where teams rotate opponents, giving children an enhanced matchplay experience similar to styles used in training.
For U6s and U8s

Worcestershire Tournaments (7 a-side)
Squads from Bromsgrove compete against other local clubs in the Worcestershire Area. Tournaments take place on Sundays usually once a month and all our players are given the opportunity to take part.
For U8s, U10s & U12s

Badgers League
Mixed teams compete in the local Badgers league. The aim of Badgers is to help competent players prepare for the transition into adults hockey. 11-aside teams include 2 experienced adult players to support juniors and help them to become effective team players. We run 2 Badgers teams*, playing hockey each Saturday through the September-April season.
For U10s, U12s & U14s (*Players will be invited to play Badgers once they have built up sufficient skills and ability for match-play, we regularly rotate players through both squads.)

In2Hockey Competition
In2Hockey is England Hockey's adapted game format aimed at players 10-14 years old and is played as a 6-a-side game without goalkeepers, or as a 7-a-side game with goalkeepers. Subject to our numbers, Bromsgrove enters boys, girls and/or mixed squads into EH Midlands Competitions.
For U12s and U14s

England Hockey Junior Club Championships
Bromsgrove aims to enter Boys, Girls and/or Mixed squads into the England Hockey Junior Championship Competitions depending on our number of skilled players in each age-group. The teams then compete in a knockout competition to hopefully bring home the Team Cup or Plate Awards. Games usually take place on Sundays however dates of these can vary depending on how far each team progresses through each stage.
For U12s, U14s & U16s

Worcestershire Tournaments (11 a-side)
As a progression from 7-aside, our U14 & U16 Boys, Girls & Mixed teams compete against other local clubs in the Worcestershire Area. Tournaments take place on Sundays usually once a month and all our players are given the opportunity to take part.
For U14s & U16s

Adults Club Hockey
From age 13, players will be introduced to our Adults squads playing regular Saturday League Hockey. With 5 Mens and 6 Womens teams we can ensure players are matched to an Adults team relative to their skill and experience. We tend to introduce players in small groups, so they can attend training with their peers and have familiar faces with them on match days. Individuals are also paired with a friendly mentor from the team, to help guide them through this transition.
For U14s, 16s & U18s

Finally, it's worth mentioning our Vision Academy which is available to under 18 high-performance players and provides dedicated coaching and mentoring alongside their adults team training.

Our Junior Pathway also means we actively support players who might be eligible for the England Hockey Talent System, including EH Area led development initiatives such as County Hockey trials, Talent Academy sessions, or even National Age Group selection (NAGs).
